Have you ever done a detox? At the conference last week I went to a few discussions where detoxes were discussed. In general, I am hesitant to recommend cleanses (especially the all-juice kind), but they can be beneficial for some, especially as a way to hit the “reset” button and get on track with healthier habits. There are so many different kinds, it’s really important to do your homework and select the approach most appropriate for your body and your lifestyle. Safety is key.
Though weekends are usually thought of more as a time to pre- or re-tox, I came across this great post on Glamour‘s Vitamin G blog the other day and wanted to share. Click the link to see some tips from Marissa Vicario, a board-certified health coach and healthy-living expert, on important things you should do and ask yourself before starting a detox. My favorite two items are these questions:
- Why do you want to do it?
- How do you want to feel every day?
And on a completely opposite note, have you seen this video yet? Dunkin’ Love—Coffee on ice, Coffee on ice! Oh yes.

Funny you should post this because I recently watched the documentary “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead” and am now really into the idea of juicing. Of course as a dietitian I know the pros and cons of it all but for some reason that documentary really got me thinking about it. I don’t think of cleansing for weightloss purposes, I think of it as the sheer fact that we have been eating since the day we were born – our digestive systems are constantly hard at work breaking down our food into nutrients – so why not give it a rest but still provide our body with the micros that we need. I’m getting myself a juicer for my birthday (end of March) so I haven’t yet tried a juice detox that I like and stick to. All those bottled green juices contain celery and I gag at the thought of celery in general, so you can imagine how trying those juices went for me haha.
Thanks for weighing on this—I love when you share your RD perspective. I tend to agree with you about giving the digestive system a little break rather than focus on weight loss. I feel like a few days every month/season would be doable but everyone is different.
I would love a juicer, but my tiny kitchen does not leave my room for it. It would definitely be a great way to avoid celery in juice!
