Happy Friday! What are you getting into this weekend?

For anyone planning to indulge in a few adult beverages, I have a  YouBeauty post up on Skinny Summer Cocktail Hacks  so you can toast to your good health without overdoing it. Cheers!

Since we’re talking cocktails, how about chatting a little about things that go well with cocktails? mini brie and apple

One of the first food-things I think of when it comes to cocktails is fruit and cheese. Oysters are also at the top of the list. oysters

As someone who is, well, not very tall and has to be mindful of not going too far too soon, I find it helpful to have a drink in the context of a meal or at least in the context of eating real food—a balanced mix of protein and carbs can help keep your blood sugar stable, and something with a little fat slows the digestion. I hate tapas because you end up spending so much money so quickly, but I also love tapas because you can make your appetizers into a meal if you want to. One quick way to do that: just add a simple salad to something protein-rich.

In general, a few of my favorite things to eat while drinking include:

  • Fruit and cheese
  • Veggies and hummus (I know, I know—but if you make a pretty crudite platter with lots of color it’s totally not boring!)
  • Antipasti platters with different cured meats, cheeses, roasted veggies, olives, and good bread
  • Crostini
  • Olives
  • Oysters
  • Skewers with meat or fish on them (totally selling it right now) or stuff like grilled octopus with arugula
  • Chocolate
  • Breakfast (kidding!)sugar and plumm chocolate

I’m actually invited to a Cinco de Mayo party and have been googling the heck out of Chex mix recipes and other party-people foods that I never get to make in my everyday studio apartment life. Because I have a guilty conscience at baseline (yay, Catholicism!) and don’t feel right serving friends blatantly unhealthy things or healthy things that taste like cardboard, I’m sure there will be some recipe tweaking until I get it right, but that’s part of the fun.

Another topic I like talking about: things that are good to eat after consuming alcohol. I’m talking less about, like, pizza and more about things to help you avoid or deal with a hangover. Because alcohol is dehydrating, you want to make sure to drink plenty of water and to replenish electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium, along with amino acid cysteine, which all get depleted when we drink.

A few of my go-to items:

  • Bananas
  • Avocado
  • Yogurt
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Eggs
  • Oats
  • Coconut water
  • Smoothies

Everyone is different, so depending on your age (aka time in which to learn your limits), you may or may not have developed a good sense of what works for you, so feel free to take my suggestions with a grain of salt if you know that eggs make you feel like death or find that, say a corn muffin is your magic hangover food.

What do you like to eat when drinking? Any hangover cures I should know about?
