I love when people talk about this thing called “The Weekend.” As if working in clinical weren’t enough to totally warp my perception of time, being a small business owner and writer has smeared even more vaseline on the lens. I have no idea what Tuesday feels like or how a Friday night is any different from any other night. I’ve gotten so used to celebrating stuff like Mothers Day and July 4th on other days, I forget sometimes they’re a big. Is this what it’s like to live in L.A. where the weather is always nice and the traffic is consistently awful?
With some changes coming up for me in my work schedule, I’m looking forward to being able to get more of my work done during “normal” business hours so I’m actually able to enjoy on some downtime and see my friends and family (and the fur children) more.
Something else I’ve struggled with is the fact that sometimes I just…lose steam. Part of this is genetic (thanks, Mom!), but it’s also because I try to fit too much into a day. It can get really embarrassing when I start yawning at an event and it’s only 8 pm. A couple months ago when a guy I was going to meet for a drink suggested 5 o’clock, I was, like, “Ten points to Gryffindor!” Okay, I didn’t actually say that out loud, but I was thinking it. The way to my heart is to get there before dark, apparently. Calling back helps too.
Anyway. My long term goal is to carve out some weekend time each week, and while I may never get to “weekends are sacred” status, I know that taking time off is important for many reasons. It dawned on me that my last vacation that was longer than 4 days was 2015 when I went to Milan to visit the World Expo, so I’d say I’m long overdue. My last staycation was in 2012, and I remember trying really hard to I’m looking forward to some fun short trips this summer, though, so at least there’s plenty to be excited about.
When I’m working on a weekend, I try to make up for it by fitting in favorite yoga or pilates classes and making myself nice meals. Here’s what I ate last Saturday, when I was on deadline and catching up on various projects.
Breakfast: Eggs, avocado, veggies, and sweet potato toast
Snack: Plain Greek yogurt with cocoa powder and a teaspoon of peanut butter
Dinner: A turkey burger over salad (when I’m busy, it’s so much easier to just throw stuff together in a mixing bowl and call it a meal), topped with goat cheese, balsamic glaze, and this amazing beet sauerkraut from Cleveland Kraut.
