Happy Wednesday. Can you believe we’re into the first full week of 2016? I’m into it. For this week’s What I Ate Wednesday, I thought I’d share a few highlights from my family trip to South Carolina over the new year. It was nice to get out of the city and enjoy some warmer weather for a few days—not to mention some delicious food.

Breakfasts: I was mostly in a savory breakfast mood, and enjoyed some variation on oatmeal with flax, spinach, and an egg most mornings. SC savory oats with egg

Lunches: We mostly cooked dinner in, but lunchtime gave us a chance to explore local places. A few standouts:

This blackened Carolina trout and green beans, blackened Carolina Trout

A delicious salmon salmon in Charleston at SNOBSNOB salmon salad

and this homemade pulled pork, turkey, collards, and green beans at a New Years Day BBQHomemade SC BBQ

Snacks were mostly things like bananas, clementines, and dry-roasted edamame—didn’t even think to take pictures.

Dinners: We cooked a lot at home (steak with sautéed spinach and baked potato, chili) but did go out on New Years Eve. We must have found the only restaurant around without a NYE upcharge. I went for the lobster tails and a fried green tomato salad to start. NYE lobster tails

Then on New Years Day we improvised black-eyed pea chili that also had chicken and pumpkin in it. On the side: salad and chicken wings we marinated in Soy Vay teriyaki sauce. Gotta get those lucky New Years foods in there!

All in wall, it was a great mix of festive and healthy foods to ring out 2015 and kick off 2016. Happy New Year!
