Today was my “transplant experience” day in Renal. As a dietetic intern, I’m not allowed to work with transplant patients, so the program tries to provide exposure in bits and pieces. It was really interesting.

There are a lot of nutritional considerations to keep in mind for impaired renal function. Phosphorus, which is found mostly  in dairy, meat, poultry, fish, and whole grains, is a nutrient that needs to be limited in this population, which can be very frustrating. It’s also in chocolate and cola. Guess which one I’d have a hard time giving up…Tapping into what can help motivate a person to make the necessary dietary changes is really important.

Scare tactics involving the Phos Monster might work for some better than others, but either way, I thought this little cartoon was pretty funny, especially taken out of context and sitting in a pile in an office.
