I really disagree with the whole “feed a cold, starve a fever,” saying. I think you should feed both. Maybe there’s a biochemical rationale buried somewhere in the old saying, but I feel that if your body is fighting something, you need to make sure you’re giving it enough calories and nutrients to its job.
On my way home from a poetry reading last night, I felt a sore throat coming on, and shivered into sleep with a little difficulty. It may or may not have been a fever, but whatever it was, it sent some pretty strange dreams my way.
Unfortunately, when I woke up in the morning, I was still feeling pretty groggy and off. Luckily, my appetite was still more or less intact, so after a normal breakfast (and registering for fall classes—yikes), I got out the door and made sure to grab a green juice to fight that wilted feeling in my limbs. I gravitate toward veggies when I’m fighting something.
For lunch, I warmed up a bowl of leftover cabbage-and-bean soup and made a sandwich that packed in a bunch more vegetables. It was pretty awesome: whole wheat bread with a ton of pumpkin hummus (canned pumpkin + hummus= lazy person’s pumpkin hummus), greens, sliced tomato, roasted pepper, and roasted zucchini. I feel like a tool calling a sandwich epic, but sometimes you just have to. I felt a lot more awake and less achey by the time I was done eating.
We’ll see how the rest of the day goes. I’ve gotten done about a third of the work I’d set aside for today and have to leave for class in a bit, but it’s still better than nothing. Tomorrow’s another late start at the clinic, so I can finish more work in the morning, most likely.
